  • GHB (gamma hydroxybutyrate) has been abused in the U.S. for its euphoric, sedative, and anabolic (body building) effects.
  • GHB is a strong, rapidly acting Central Nervous System Depressant
  • Initially available in health food stores or by mail order
  • Slightly salty tasting white powder

Street Names

  • Grievous Bodily Harm, G, Liquid Ecstasy, Georgia Home Boy, Scoop, Easy Lay, Nature’s Qualude, Liquid E

Who Uses GHB?

  • Has become popular among body builders
  • Has become popular as a club drug
  • Increasingly involved in OVERDOSES, POISIONINGS, DATE RAPES AND DEATHS!

GHB has been used by sexual predators to lower the defenses of women.  These effects along with its ability to induce coma and amnesia cause its name to be added to the date rape drugs.

Routes of Administration

  • Swallowed
  • Mixed in drinks
    • Liquid, Powder, tablets and capsule form
  • GHB is often used in combination with alcohol…increasing the level of danger

Signs & Symptoms of Use

  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Amnesia
  • Deep Long-Lasting sleep
  • Lack of Coordination

Short – Term Effects

  • Mild euphoria and lowers inhibitions
  • Slow breathing and heart rates to extremely dangerous levels
  • Induces effects similar to alcohol
  • Sedation
  • Depression
  • Delusions
  • Hallucinations
  • Seizures
  • Amnesia
  • Dis-inhibition
  • Enhance euphoric feeling
  • Hormone releasing effects can lead to muscle growth

Long – Term Effects

  • Dependency may occur
  • Depression
  • Coma
  • Overdose
    • Can happen rather quickly
    • Signs of overdose:
      • Drowsiness
      • Nausea
      • Vomiting
      • Headache
      • Loss of consciousness
      • Loss of motor reflexes
      • Impaired breathing
      • Ultimately death
